Paying Dues

Game Development is rarely easy. If it were, as the old adage goes, everyone would be doing it. As I mentioned in a previous post, we did some testing over the weekend. Well, I should say attempted to do some testing. I scheduled some people to drop by with their machines, and we set up a small LAN. We tried to get into a round, and....  nothing.  It didn't work at all.

We made the mistake of trying to get some features in before the testing session, and neglected to test them properly. We spent the rest of the time trying to fix major issues instead of gathering valuable feedback or just fixing minor problems.

What this means for Duffers is minor in the overall scheme of things, but discouraging nontheless. We're pushing back our date for a closed beta for least a week so we can properly test multiplayer, and try to iron out some gameplay issues.

Baby steps...

We know, hence the title of the entry "paying dues". We're not seasoned developers (we are seasoned gamers, however). If we really want to make a name for ourselves and break into this industry as a developer, we can't expect it to be a waltz. Also, making a golf game using the Unreal Engine (without acces to the source) shouldn't be viewed as trivial, either.

heh the best way to make a mark is to do something nice and original :) it seems like being a perfectionist is a good attitude to bring into development as well, my problem with all the stuff i do is i end up saying "meh, good enough" and all the stuff i produce is very ametuerish. all the new screenshots that you guys have produced have been very impressive with how nice you are getting the skins to look on the giant meshes, that must have taken ages =_=

it actually wasn't too bad... it's really just a matter of having your edges in the right place. And Unwrap UVW is your friend.
